How to lower cholesterol and ApoB naturally: an action plan

Part of the guide: Cholesterol & lipids →

In short

  • The 4 levers with the biggest effect: soluble fibre, swapping fats, exercise, less excess weight.
  • Goal: a noticeable change in 8–12 weeks, confirmed by a follow-up test.
  • With supplements, stick to the proven ones (beta-glucans, plant sterols).
  • Track ApoB, not just LDL — it shows progress more precisely.

If you know you have raised cholesterol or ApoB, there is good news in one respect. This is where lifestyle has real power. Below is a plan you can start today. (For an explanation of the values, see Cholesterol, LDL and ApoB.)

Step 1 — Soluble fibre every day

Soluble fibre binds cholesterol in the gut. Aim for oats, barley, legumes, apples daily. Beta-glucans (~3 g/day) contribute to maintaining normal cholesterol levels (EFSA).

Step 2 — Swap saturated fats for unsaturated ones

Less butter, fatty processed meats and fried food; more olive oil, nuts, avocado and oily fish. This swap contributes to normal cholesterol levels (EFSA). Avoid trans fats (industrial baked goods).

Step 3 — Add plant sterols and omega-3

Plant sterols (~1.5–2.4 g/day) lower cholesterol further (EFSA). Omega-3 from fish twice a week supports the lipid profile.

Step 4 — Exercise and a healthy weight

Aerobic exercise (brisk walking, cycling, running) on most days of the week lowers triglycerides and improves the ratio. Losing excess kilograms lowers ApoB further.

A sample day

MealSuggestion
Breakfastoat porridge with berries and walnuts
Lunchlegumes + vegetables + olive oil
Dinneroily fish + whole-grain side + salad
Snacka handful of nuts, fruit

How do I know it's working? Repeat ApoB (and lipids) in 8–12 weeks. ApoB shows the change in the number of atherogenic particles more precisely than LDL alone.

When to see a doctor. With high cardiovascular risk, familial hypercholesterolaemia or very high values, treatment is sometimes needed alongside lifestyle. Lifestyle is the foundation, but it does not replace a doctor's judgement.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly can I lower cholesterol naturally?

With consistent lifestyle changes, LDL and ApoB often drop noticeably within 8–12 weeks.

Which food lowers cholesterol the most?

Soluble fibre (oats, barley, legumes) and swapping saturated fats for unsaturated ones. Plant sterols help too.

Can I lower ApoB without medication?

With mildly raised values, often yes. With high risk, a doctor decides.
