Lipase
Lipase is a digestive enzyme of the pancreas that breaks down fats. It is the most specific blood sign of pancreatic inflammation — with it, it rises more and for longer than amylase.

Why it matters
UEG/IAP: an elevated level supports pancreatitis.
If it’s low
Low lipase is mostly insignificant.
If it’s high
Markedly elevated lipase strongly indicates inflammation of the pancreas — usually with severe abdominal pain. A mild rise can accompany other abdominal or kidney disorders.
What to do
Lipase is not a lifestyle marker. A marked rise with severe abdominal pain (radiating to the back) is an EMERGENCY. Prevention: limit alcohol, manage triglycerides and gallstones.
