Why it matters

ECLM: indicate a possible urinary tract infection.

If it’s low

The absence of leukocytes is favorable (infection unlikely).

If it’s high

Elevated leukocytes in the urine indicate inflammation/infection of the urinary tract (bladder, kidneys), especially with nitrites and symptoms (burning urination, frequent urination).

What to do

Leukocytes + symptoms (burning/frequent urination) mean a likely infection → consultation for a possible urine culture and treatment. Without symptoms, an antibiotic is often not needed.
