IgE (total)

IgE (total) is a type of antibody that mediates allergic reactions and defense against parasites. Total IgE tells the overall level, but not what you are allergic to.

Why it matters

EAACI: elevated indicates atopy; does not prove a specific allergy.

If it’s low

Low IgE is of no clinical significance.

If it’s high

Elevated IgE often accompanies allergic diseases (hay fever, asthma, atopic dermatitis) or infection with parasites. On its own it is not a diagnosis — it guides further tests.

What to do

Total IgE is not a lifestyle marker. With allergic symptoms, arrange specific allergen tests and work-up with a doctor.
