GGT

GGT is an enzyme in the liver and bile ducts. It is very sensitive to alcohol and to obstruction/irritation of the bile ducts, so it often helps explain why other liver tests are elevated.

Why it matters

EASL: elevated with alcohol, fatty liver, bile duct issues.

If it’s low

Low GGT has no clinical significance.

If it’s high

Elevated GGT most often indicates the effect of alcohol or fatty liver; it can also indicate bile stasis or certain medications. With abstinence and weight loss it often falls nicely.

What to do

Today: stop or strongly limit alcohol — GGT is very sensitive to it. For fatty liver, weight loss and unsweetened coffee help.
